Meet the world's fastest-maturing vertebrate.
Killifish are a diverse group of small fish. One remarkable species, the African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), can reach reproductive maturity in as little as 14 days after hatching, the fastest recorded maturation among vertebrates.
Native to temporary pools in southeastern Africa, these fish grow and reproduce before their pools disappear. Their embryos can survive the dry season in the sediment, allowing a new generation to emerge when the rains return.
